The waterfront, early morning
What we mean
Walk down to the water at sunrise and you'll see why people live here. Big oaks. Marsh grass. Herons. The river right there, close enough to touch. It is quiet. It is green. It feels like home, not like a park.
We want it to stay that way.
And this isn't a Shore Drive thing. Whether you live on the water or six streets back, it's your waterfront. It belongs to the whole neighborhood, and the whole neighborhood should have a say in what happens to it.
What we're for
- Keep it natural. The trees, the grass, and the shoreline should stay the way they are. No paving over what makes this place special.
- Keep it quiet. This is a place where people live. It should feel like it.
- Keep it ours. The waterfront should serve the families of St. Augustine South, all 2,000-plus of them, not become a destination for the whole county.
Why it matters
Over the years, the county has started to treat our waterfront like county property. Projects get planned. Meetings get held. The road gets a fresh coat of paint that makes it faster. Each step seems small. Put them together and you get a neighborhood that slowly stops being a neighborhood.
We don't think that's anyone's bad intent. We just think nobody asked the people who live here what they want. So we're saying it plainly: we want our waterfront to stay natural, quiet, and ours.
A simple test. If a plan for the waterfront would make sense in a county park but not in your own backyard, it probably doesn't belong here.
